Acocks Green Ward Committee: 20th February 2013

by Roger Harmer on 23 February, 2013

There was a very chilly meeting of the Acocks Green Ward Committee on Wednesday. Cllrs Bowen and O’Shea attended together with officers and a small but hardy group of local residents. Cllr Stacey sent his apologies.

The main items on the agenda were:

* A presentation by Phil Beardmore about Birmingham Energy Savers – which aims to insulate 29,000 homes, making it the biggest domestic insulation scheme in Europe.
* A presentation by Justin Howell from the Council’s Planning Department on current issues in planning.
* Official approval of two Community Chest applications:
£1,500 to Lakey Lane School for part of the cost of a Parent’s Shelter, which aims to encourage parents to walk their children to school by providing them with a dry place to wait to pick up their children in bad weather.
£10,250 for Community Football Sessions at Fox Hollies Leisure Centre. This is funding for 2013/4 and represents a cut in funding from previous provision. As a result sessions which used to be held over 3 days will now just run on Mondays. This is the first victim on Labour’s 50% cut in Community Chest funding for the coming financial year. As I’ve said before I believe this cut is a big mistake and is being actively opposed by the Lib Dems on the City Council.
* A short presentation by Ihjaz Afsar about Housing Management in Acocks Green.

Other issues that were raised included:

* The delays to the repair work to Acocks Green Library, this is still scheduled to start at Easter.
* The, currently closed, path to Fox Hollies Leisure Centre from Fox Hollies Road. Cllr O’Shea said a public right of way would be reinstated, but this might be achieved by creating a new walkway rather than reopening the old one, as doing this risks picking up significant repair work to the pathway and its fencing. A further update will be given at a future Ward Ctte meeting.

The next Ward Ctte meeting will be held at 7pm on Wednesday 17th April at Oaklands Primary School on Dolphin Lane.
